The Last Human?... | Chapter 2: The Peculiar Encounters
"W-who are you?" the shadow's voice finally asked. "Please d-don't hurt me..." the unknown voice said wavering. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you. Come out." Ava said in what hoped was a calming and convincing manner. The figure finally stepped out of the shadows, revealing a sparrow but it was at least 10 times bigger than a normal sparrow. It almost looked as if it was... Ava couldn't believe it. Could the sparrow be a hybrid? "Sorry i-if I scared you. My name's William, but please, do call me Will." The hybrid said, his voice finally steady and clear. "Are you a..." Ava started but paused. "Yes I am a hybrid. I know I look hideous. I should probably go now, I'm wasting your time." Will said as he began to walk away. "No, you're not. In fact, you're using my time to introduce yourself. I'm sorry too, how rude of me. I'm Ava Ritts." Ava offered his hand. Will shook it. "Nice to meet you, Ava Ritts. It gets quite lonely, especially after the incident." Will said miserably. "Wait, y-you know about it too?" Ava looked surprised. "Yes, I know it." Will said as if it was the most normal thing that could ever happen on Earth. "Come, follow me. I'll show you how I know it."
Will gestured Ava to come and follow. She obeyed, walking with him. Finally, they reached their destination. Ava gaped at the enormous hole that collided with the ground. A spaceship, or at least that's what Ava thought, had struck to the ground, causing the big hole to appear in the first place. "Is that a spaceship?" Ava said. "Yes, I'm trying to fix it." Will said, focusing on something else. "I thought... I was the only human on Earth." Ava said rather awkwardly. "I thought I was too. Well, I guess now, I'm the only half-human." Will pointed out. There was a long silence. "So, how did you become a hybrid?" Finally, Ava said. Will sighed deeply. "I knew you would ask that." Will said. "No, it's ok if you don't want to talk about it." Ava offered. "No, it's fine. I'll say my story. Once, I lived near the house you were near to. It was the forest, my home. I lived with my parents, my mum and dad. One day, my parents said to me that they needed to collect some food. Guess what? They never came back. They... abandoned me." Will told his story with a hint of devastation. "And till this day, I never saw them again." Will said. "Whoa, I'm so sorry. I never knew." Ava said with a pang of guilt. "It's fine. And anyways that was not the end of the story. A few years later after my parents were gone, I saw a purply substance oozing out of the trees. I sniffed it and little did I know that it would change my life. It turned me from a full sparrow to a half-sparrow, half-human." Will ended his story. "No offense, but that's a... unique origin story." Ava abruptly said aloud. "It is indeed." Suddenly, they heard a loud howl coming from one of the cliffs. The leaves rustled. The wind blew. Something was happening, and Ava's stomach twisted in knots. It was truly a frightening sight.
