The Last Human?... | Chapter 3: An Inkling of Doubt
There were a few more cries as the creature's howls sliced through the air. "Uh... What was that?" Ava said, her voice trembled. "I don't know. I think it's a wolf." Will said with a strong hint of uncertainty and fear. Suddenly, Ava and Will heard footsteps stomp in the ground, so hard that the footsteps shook the earth. Finally (as Will's theory was right), the wolves had stop and stared them as if they were aliens. "Who are you?" The wolf in the middle of the pack (which Ava assumed was the leader) had spoken. Great. Now first, there's a human that's half sparrow and now there's talking wolves! Ava thought as she glanced at Will. "I'm Ava, and this is Will." Ava spoke on behalf of Will and herself. "We mean no harm." Ava said as she put her hands up. She shot Will a look to say Put your hands up too. Will follow her instructions. "Good. And you, boy. What exactly are you?" The leader replied coldly. "I'm a hybrid. Half-bird, half-human." Will introduced himself. There was a long pause. There was whispering and talking that rippled through the pack of wolves. "Come follow us." The leader said. Ava was too afraid not to be disrespecting the leader. She and Will had followed her.
"Zora, please tour these humans to our base." The leader said. "Yes Lian. I will." Zora said as she touched Ava and Will in the arm. "Hi, the name's Zora. You must have had a fright with our leader. I'm sorry about that. She tends to be like that sometimes." Zora said with sympathy. Ava felt somewhat relief because of Zora's act of sympathy. She had had a paranormal day. "Welcome to the Solum Pack. This is our home and Lian takes people who need a home and raise them here. It depends on the person if they want to stay longer or not. Some people here had stayed their whole lives here when they were young." Zora explained. "Wait... so basically this is a place to seek refuge?" Ava asked, just out of curiosity. "Yes. It basically is." Zora answered. "I'll take you to your room. I chose the best one just for you." So they knew we were coming?, Ava thought but shook the thought off. "Okay. Will, come." Ava gestured Will to come. Will nodded vigorously. "I'll definitely come." Zora took them upstairs to their rooms. She then opened the door. "Here you go. You can stay here for as long as you like. Make yourself feel at home guys." She said then walked away. Ava took a deep breath. This room was either going to be good, or bad. Will looked like he thought the same thing. Ava looked at him to say "Are you ready?" and he nodded in reply. She opened the door and it revealed a set of two comfortable beds, along with a window seat with a beautiful view and a dining table. It was amazing and their jaws both dropped at the moment they stepped in. There was even a mini fridge and on top of it with delicious snacks. "This is too bizarre." Will said as he looked at the room with awe. Ava thought so too. She dived head first to the comfy, marshmallow beds and closed her eyes, leading her to sleep.
"Ava? Ava! Wake up! Zora's asking what food do you want to eat." Ava popped her eyes open. It was Will looking at her patiently. "Tell her I'm not hungry and I'm good with snacks." Ava said as she yawned. "Okay." Will said as he walked to Zora and said something to her. Zora then handed a tray with a can of beans and a bowl and spoon to eat with. "Thanks Zora!" Will said as he excitedly opened the can. "You're very welcome!" Zora said then left. Will first smelled the can of beans, then he pulled a disgusted face. "YUCK! What smell is that?!" Will exclaimed as he pushed away the stinky can of beans. "Why don't you check the expiry date?" Ava suggested. Will checked the expiry date written on the can. "Your instinct was correct! It is expired. You should throw food when it's expired, it's really dangerous." He said as he threw away the remains of it. Ava pulled a thinking face. "Could Zora... try to poison us?" Ava said with a hunch. She lowered her voice to a whisper. "Will, I don't think we should trust them." She said with slight suspicion. "I think you're right Ava." Will agreed as he laid down on his bed and slept peacefully. Ava couldn't sleep because of her inkling of doubt.
