The Last Human?... | Chapter 4: There's Always a Catch
Blood puddled on the floor. Ava laid on the floor, helplessly thinking what she could do. Blood oozed out of Will, which was eaten by the pack of wolf. She closed her eyes and the only thing she could do was hope for the best.
Ava jolted awake, a rush of adrenaline from that ruthless nightmare. She shuddered at the thought of Will lying on the ground, covered in blood. "Was that a vision?" Ava thought with her heart rapidly beating fast. As if on cue, Will also woke up and stretched his wings. "Morning Ava, how are you feeling? Ava? Ava, what's wrong?" Will snapped Ava's thoughts away of her nightmare. "Wha? Oh yup! Totally fine. Why would you ask that?" Ava said, masking her gruesome thoughts away, but it seemed that her masking didn't work on Will. "Ava, what's on your mind? If you want to talk, you know I'm here." Will offered. "It's fine. Now, what's for breakfast?" Ava thought quickly to change the subject. Though she couldn't stop thinking about what she could do about her nightmare.
"Will, I think I left something at my grandma's place. I need to go back and get it at midnight. Is there anything that we brought with us?" Ava said, assessing her plan carefully. "No, I'll come with you to get it. Wait. But why in the world are we going to retrieve your things at midnight?" Will said, with concerned curiosity. "Because if there are still any people in the world, they'll see us in the morning, they'll suspect us." Ava replied. "Uh... okay then. I'll go ask Zora for permission." Will said then walked away. Tonight they are going to escape.
Will came back from and threw the door open. "I asked Zora but she said that we need to be accompanied with one of their wolves." Will said as he closed the door. "Oh. I think I don't we need to go then. We can go tomorrow." Ava said, knowing that if they escaped, the wolf accompanying would chase them down. She also knew that wolves are quick on their 4 legs. So they would need to escape from the window. She opened the blinds in the window to reveal metal bars replacing the glass for the window. They both gasped in unison. "Uh Ava, I don't think those bars aren't meant to be there." Will said shakily. "No, they are. Because they're trapping us inside." replied Ava.
They both sat on the bed, processing the new discovery they'd just seen. "So, why would they try to trap us inside?" Will said, clearly overwhelmed by what they just saw. "I have suspicions." Ava started then lowered her voice. "I think they're either trying to eat us or kill us." Ava said her hunch. "Wait what?" Will said as he sorted out this new piece of information. "Think about it. Why would they provide us free food and shelter? What I learnt from this new discovery is that there's always a catch." Ava said. Will thought for a moment. "You're right!" Will finally said. "What's the plan then?" "I think that we'll escape at midnight. But how will we escape?" Ava said her thoughts aloud to Will. They planned about different solutions and processed some information. They learnt different things from each other. But two things was for sure. They did not want to get eaten alive, and they had to do something about it.
Midnight crept in and their plan was coming all together. Their plan had 2 steps. First, they would have to escape from the window by bending the metal bars. Then using the sheets, they would tie together a rope and climb down, leading them to safety. Although the plan had only two steps, the plan was easier said than done. Using a knife, Ava cutted slowly through the metal bars as quietly as possibly, but with small screeching sounds. Luckily, it worked. Step 1, completed. While waiting for midnight, Ava and Will tied the knots of sheets that represented a rope. Now it's was time for the real challenge; to get out of the room through the window. Ava tested the sheets of rope out by climbing down, Will holding the "rope" as firmly as he can. Ava tried her best not to look down. Finally, her feet was in contact with the ground, sending her a rush of relief. Now all she had to do was wait for Will to get down. Will, still inside the room, tied the rope in one of the legs of the bed that made sure he wouldn't fall to his death. Slowly and carefully, he made his way down until he touched the ground with his feet. He sighed with relief. Step 2, completed. Without even thinking, they walked fast so that they wouldn't capture any attention. Suddenly, they heard rustling through bushes in the trees. It revealed Lian scowling with fury. "Where do you think you two are going?"
