A beautiful and heart-wrenching young adult graphic novel takes a look at eating disorders, family dynamics, and ultimately, a journey to self-love.

Valerie Chu is quiet, studious, and above all, thin. No one, not even her best friend Jordan, knows that she has been binging and purging for years. But when tragedy strikes, Val finds herself taking a good, hard look at her priorities, her choices, and her own body. The path to happiness may lead her away from her hometown and her mother's toxic projections―but first she will have to find the strength to seek help.

trigger warning: eating disorder

Hungry Ghost I believe has a great message that everyone should know, no matter who you are. You never know what people are going through, and even if they aren't (half of the time this is the case), treat them as if they are. The last thing they need is another problem when they've had enough of it already. I saw a poster in the mall, it said "Asking for help is never a weakness". People, don't be afraid to ask. Always remember that. I think people really need to read this book because some people aren't really aware of this happening.

I hope that people aren't aware will be someday.

When I mean Wynd, I technically mean the whole series, because of how EPIC it was. I really liked how the characters in the story wasn't friends at first, but then grew to become friends. I am patiently waiting for late 2025, because that's when I think Book 4 will be released. I'm going straight to an online shop and buying it, that's definitely sure. On one particular time in the library, I asked a librarian for a recommendation and she wanted to suggest reading the Wynd series, but said that it was too old for me. I was skeptical to pick it up at first, because I was sort of intimidated by the complex plot Wynd has. But I decided that it wouldn't hurt to try something out of my comfort zone, right? I read Book 1 and 2, and eventually Book 3 (mini storytime!: when I reserved it, it nearly took a month until it was available for me to pick it up 😭). Personal opinion: I personally think this book is so likeable that no one can't actually dislike it.

I've just finished reading this book. At 2023, I was midway with the book, and I was into it, but I had my doubts. Mainly because I just started to read long novels, so it required a LOT of patience. I myself at that time didn't really have much patience. But I truly wish I did. Because this book was EPIC. The plot, the suspense, times when it left me on a cliffhanger, I knew I had to put this book in the podium. This is a trilogy, and I'm going to read it very soon. I really liked the way that I could really well imagine what was happening mid book. It was really refreshing. I feel like if all books had a really easy way to imagine what was happening, it would make it 10 times better for sure.

“Super sweet and totally heartwarming!”—Alice Oseman, bestselling author of Heartstopper and Loveless

Momo Gardner is the kind of friend who’s always ready to lend a helping hand. She’s introverted, sensitive, and maybe a little too trusting, but she likes to believe the best in people. PG, on the other hand, is a bit of a lone wolf, despite her reputation for being a flirt and a player. Underneath all that cool mystery, she’s actually quick to smile, and when she falls for someone, she falls hard. An unexpected meet-cute brings the two together, kicking off the beginning of an awkward yet endearing courtship—but with their drastically different personalities, Momo’s overprotective friend, and PG’s past coming back to haunt her, Momo and PG’s romance is put to the test.
Warning, be really prepared for a queer world, and CUTENESS OVERLOADS. This was such a wholesome book, it literally got me out of a reading slump 😭... which in my case, my reading slumps are quite hard to get out of. The art style is impeccable, even ALICE OSEMAN wrote an editorial comment (I LOVE HER SO MUCH OMG <3) saying how sweet and heartwarming it was. You don't know how much I loved this, THE GREAT ALICE OSEMAN HERSELF said that so it has to be right 😚. I really like shy characters randomly blushing furiously, and Momo is one, so bonus points!

This is living proof of my Alice Oseman love

✨ TOP 1. of BOOK GRAMMY'S

By Rod Pulido

Experience the extreme joys, sorrows, and triumphs of a queer Filipino-American teenager struggling to prove himself in an unforgiving world. A poignant coming-of-age story, perfect for fans of Patron Saints of Nothing and Juliet Takes a Breath.

Self preservation. That's Bobby's motto for surviving his notoriously violent high school unscathed. Being out and queer would put an unavoidable target on his back, especially in a Filipino community that frowns on homosexuality. It's best to keep his head down, get good grades, and stay out of trouble.

But when Bobby is unwillingly outed in a terrible way, he no longer has the luxury of being invisible. A vicious encounter has him scrambling for a new way to survive--by fighting back. Bobby is inspired by champion Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao to take up boxing and challenge his tormentor. Then Pacquiao publicly declares his stance against queer people, and Bobby's faith--in his hero and in himself--is shaken to the core.

A powerful and unflinching debut that will both shatter and uplift hearts with every read.

Warning: violence and homophobia

I have got to say, before ranking this list of books, I had no hesitations into choosing this book as the winner of the Book Grammy's (Trademarked by Sophia). The writing was top tier, so this book got itself into a top tier (literally). It was so satisfying, and had so many funny parts. I have a thing for funny things, so bonus points. I'm being honest, I have never "hmm"ed a lot in laughter when I'm reading. The first chapter got me so hooked I was so curious to see what unravels next. Again, I don't usually experience that when reading. I really hope Rod Pulido makes more books, because the world needs him... and his books of course.

Thank you so much for reading the Book Grammy's. The decision has been decided.

BOOK GRAMMY'S WILL BECOME AN ANNUAL THING!!!

But seriously, thank you for reading this blog. It's great to know that some people are reading my work.

See you next Saturday!
