How our day went at the National Day of Singapore Reception (Part 2)
Previously on gluttony...
"Where's Ninang?" I ask Mum, not entirely sure if she knows where she is. "I think we should go to the back. Maybe the main course is there." Mum suggests. Great idea.
After rushing and following the crowd, I eventually find Ninang lining up in a queue. "There you are! Wait, what are you lining up for?
"I wanna get some main course."
"...what?"
"You don't know? There's food out here in the back."
It takes me a few seconds to process this before lining up and rethinking life decisions.
I peek at a glimpse of the food. Whoa.
I try to remain as patient as I can be, but just the sight of the food is not helping at all. I'm not exactly what you call "a patient person" as well.
After what's felt a lifetime of waiting, I swiftly take a disposable plate and...
ATTACKKK!
My motor skills are exceptional, especially taking every single edible thing and putting on my plate. Gosh, I really was born for this, I humbly remark.
Scooping stuff ranging from sauces to deep fried goodies, I take them all as if I'm totally unaware that there are second rounds and my life depends on this.
A while after I take my pick on the irresistible selection, I wolf down my food until I've reached my limits.
I stare at my plate, my brain urging me to finish its remains, my stomach disagreeing.
"Why Sophia? Can't finish it?" Mum asks me.
I nod.
With all my strength (which really, wasn't a lot), I scoop my food and forcefully shove it in my mouth multiple times before finishing it and accepting defeat.
Not reading the room at all, Ninang brings some cake over in a plate and just looking at it gave me a tooth cavity from how much whipped cream there was.
"Want some?"
"I'm... good thanks. I'll eat it later."
We discuss about everything that we could possibly think of, like how full I was, or the event, and have a chill conversation while at the front of the room is just people howling with laughter or catching up with close friends. But either way, no event my family goes to doesn't have any conversation.
It still remains that way.
*
We finish our conversation, and it ends on a good note. Why? Because I've digested all or my food, and we've regained a bit of energy. The end of this event is nearing, and so we have to make it worth our while.
There's a small photo booth near at the entrance, and putting the most weirdest and wackiest props, I'm dressed full on with a cow boy hat, sunglasses, holding a small sign and to top it off, a blue boa.
We hurry to the photo booth and pose for the camera. The lady running the booth counts down until 1 to pose, and smoothly, we transition from different poses to another. The machine dispenses a strip of all our photos in it, and honestly? I'm kinda obsessed with how we look.
I laugh as I see myself pulling a nonchalant face in the camera while everyone else is smiling and looking their best.
While I run through the photos, Mum and Ninang line up to get goodie bags, but unfortunately, they're only for adults to receive the gifts.
They both thank the staff for giving the goodie bags and we walk out of the Singapore High Commission and I look back feeling like I will never forget the memories that I made there.
THANKS FOR READING FOLKS
